About this work
A soldier, full-length, facing right, holding a matchlock (a specific type of firearm) in his right hand on his left shoulder, the barrel pointing upward. In his outstretched left hand, a burning match – the smoke not yet depicted in this first state. This print is part of the series of 42 hand-numbered prints of matchlockmen in the Wapenhandelinghe.
