About this work
Foreigners. Makimono (handscroll), by Ishizaki Yushi, first half 19th century. The Japanese artist who painted this makimono, depicted various foreign types. In the centre is a group of cannibals. To the left are two European, probably Dutch, naval officers in early 19th-century uniform. Other Westerners, right, are wearing 18th-century dress. The couple are accompanied by a babu - a nursemaid - and a servant, probably from Java.
