About this work
Commemorative plate, probably made in Batavia, 1710. It was customary among the leading Dutch residents of Batavia to leave commemorative plates to those who had cared for them and officiated at and after their death, such as the pallbearers at their funeral. These plates or dishes were known in Malay as pirings. This piring commemorates Jacobus Broegh (1663–1710). Broegh was a master attendant. As head of the shipyards in and around Batavia he supervised the loading and equipage of the VOC fleet in Asia.
