Tribute to the French vice-admiral De Suffren by the VOC

Lead medal; cast from an original specimen. Obverse: head of a classicist woman to the left, with upraised hair, merging into an elephant's head, wearing a small crown on her head; below it an (antique) rudder with fish and the VOC emblem, around which a laurel branch is draped; with inscription, marked. Reverse: inscription within a laurel wreath. With a thick, slightly raised rim. Commissioned by the VOC as a tribute to Vice-Admiral De Suffren for services rendered during the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War (1780-1784), particularly at the Cape of Good Hope and off the coasts of Ceylon (Trincomali) and India.
