Chaitya in the Karli Caves near Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

View of the chaitya (sanctuary) of the largest of a group of caves in Karli, in the western Indian state of Maharashtra. This cave is originally Buddhist and is associated with one of the schools of early Buddhism, named Mahāsāṃghika. In this photograph one sees the stupa, from 120 AD, with a parasol-shaped cover that is rare among these caves. Outside the cave lies a Hindu temple for the goddess Ekvira of the Koli, the fishermen.
