About this work

Photo album in a mother-of-pearl cover with two metal locks. Leather spine with the word 'Album' in blind stamping. At the front of the album, a title page with the words 'Photographic Album' in gold stamping. This is followed by a page with an (unwritten) index of names. The album contains 19 slip-in leaves with gold on the edges. In total, 123 cartes-de-visite, one of which is loose in a case. The album was purchased empty by collector L.J. Hartkamp and filled by him with cartes-de-visite. For the majority, he wrote the name of the photographer on the slip-in leaf, as well as personal details, functions, and family relations of the depicted person. It concerns cartes-de-visite (often after a print) of, among others, members of French, German, Belgian, and Dutch royal houses and European politicians such as Bismarck, Gladstone, and Garibaldi. Also photographs of clergymen, freedom fighters, and well-known persons from outside Europe, including the Shah of Persia.
