About this work

Photo album in a cover of batik cloth. The endpapers have a beige leaf motif. The album contains 100 album leaves with 514 photographs including some panoramas composed of multiple prints. Most photographs have a handwritten inscription. These are images of tobacco and rubber cultivation on plantations and oil extraction on Sumatra and Java: the fields, barns, buildings, villas, gardens and installations. Also Asian and European workers are depicted. The last category is sometimes indicated with names such as 'Henny', 'Leen', 'Kees', 'Chris', 'Roëll', 'Poolman-Beyne', 'Jelgerhuis-Swildens', 'Van IJzeren', 'v.d. Sta[...]-Oostmeijer', 'v. Zijp', 'Kroese', 'Herman' and 'Heinecken'. In addition, sights in cities and in the countryside are depicted, including mountains, volcanoes, bays, sawa's, parks, temples, hotels, shops, streets, railways and bridges. Also the sea voyage to and from the Dutch East Indies via the Suez Canal is discussed.
