About this work
The symbol for the suffering Christ, the pelican that feeds her young with her own blood, is surrounded by a wreath and flanked by personifications of love (left) and science (right). Above the pelican, within a cartouche, is the depiction of Christ revealing himself to his disciples during the meal. One of the disciples drinks the blood spurting from the side of Christ. Below the wreath is a four-line verse in Dutch.
