Deceit Leads the People to Ruin

The personification of Seduction (Seductio) leads the three-headed People (Vulgus) to an abyss. The People is divided and blindfolded. Seduction carries glasses and masks that symbolize her deceit. In the background, representations of this deceit: a pilgrim at a Marian image, a procession and the adoration of an altarpiece. On the right, a scholar turns away from all these events. With a book and a horn he leaves the scene. The print has a Dutch, Latin and French inscription and is part of a twelve-part series with the subject of the degeneration of the Catholic clergy and the causes of the uprising and the Iconoclasm.
