About this work
Mary, with the Christ Child on her lap, appears to Christian slaves, still in chains but already rescued by the Trinitarians, whose ships are visible in the background. A Trinitarian, perhaps Saint John of Matha, intercedes for them with Mary, who hands them the scapular with the Maltese cross, the emblem of the Order. In the lower left, the coat of arms of Father Louis Petit, superior of the Order of the Holy Trinity in Paris. According to the two-line French inscription, the painting with this subject is located in the Mathurins monastery of the Order of the Holy Trinity in Paris.
