About this work

A child learns from a book while the teacher watches strictly with a rod. Around his head is a bandage and he holds a hand against his cheek, possibly due to toothache. They are followed by a beggar, a poor man on crutches without a left lower leg, a man with edema or dropsy and a blind man with a guide dog. The print is part of a series on the miseries of human existence.
