About this work
A child learns from a book while the teacher watches strictly with a rod. Around his head is a bandage and he holds a hand to his cheek, possibly due to toothache. They are followed by a beggar, a poor man on crutches without a left lower leg, a man with edema or dropsy, and a blind man with a guide dog. Life is short and is governed by study and illness. Under the image a verse in Latin and a Dutch and French inscription in book type. This print is part of an album.
