About this work

The scholars and cartographers Gerard Mercator (1512-1594) and Jodocus Hondius (1563-1612) are depicted together among their instruments related to their profession. Both produced maps and celestial and terrestrial globes and constructed astronomical instruments. The portrait appeared in 1613 in Mercator's 'Atlas', published by Jodocus Hondius in Amsterdam. It was long attributed to the engraver Hendrick Hondius, but this attribution was rejected in 1994.
