About this work

In a medallion, surrounded by various ornamentation, Christ is depicted as the Man of Sorrows. With his left hand he points to a tablet with the words: Meekness and Humility. Next to him symbols referring to his birth and life, such as the stable of Bethlehem. The border inscription of the medallion refers to a Bible verse Matt. 11:29. Above and below the medallion two Dutch poems by Karel van Mander, the lower one is signed with his motto: Een is noedich. Below the representation a verse in Latin by Cornelius Schonaeus.
