About this work
A sleeping merchant or peddler is robbed and mocked by monkeys. The monkeys have opened his basket of wares and are playing with the contents. One monkey has loosened the man's trousers and pinches his nose shut against the stench; another monkey defecates in his hat. In the background, a group of monkeys dances while other monkeys make music.
