About this work
Mary mourns at the foot of the cross, the body of the dead Christ on her lap. At his arm, the crown of thorns. On either side of this central scene are images of crucified female saints. At the top, God the Father, amidst angels with crowns for the martyrs. At the bottom, Christ is followed by female believers carrying crosses on their backs.
