Levi

Levi, the third son of Jacob. He holds a flaming sword, the symbol of wrath. Out of uncontrollable anger, Levi and his brother Simeon destroyed the city of Shechem. Levi sits on a bear, also an attribute of wrath. Next to Levi stands the statue of Wrath. He drives a spear through the back of a kneeling man. All attributes refer to Jacob's blessing of Levi (Genesis 49). The print is part of a series on the twelve sons of Jacob and patriarchs of Israel and has a Dutch and Latin inscription.
