About this work
St. Ambrose sits in his study reading a book. He wears his bishop's mantle. On the table open books, writing materials and an hourglass. Next to him stands the beehive, a reference to the swarm of bees that went into his mouth when he was in the cradle. In the foreground lies a cat. In the frame in the margin a four-line inscription in Latin.
