About this work
St. Gregory the Great sits in his study at a table full of books. He writes in an open book. He wears the papal vestments and the tiara, and holds the pontifical cross-staff. At his feet lies a sleeping dog. In the margin a ten-line inscription, in two columns, in Latin.
