About this work

St. Ambrose sits in his study at a table full of books. He wears his bishop's mantle. In his hands he holds his staff and an open book. In the foreground stands the beehive, a reference to the swarm of bees that went into his mouth when he was in the cradle. In the margin a ten-line inscription, in two columns, in Latin.
