About this work

Monument with the portrait of Charles Bertin de Ram, Franciscan and priest in Leiden. The portrait is flanked by a skull and a Bible, on which a sleeping putto rests. He holds an extinguished torch and a paper with the date of death. Below is an inscription with Bertin's name and the parish in which he served. Next to the monument stand Faith, with cross and censer, and Religion. Father Time sits kneeling beside the monument, writing in a book. In the foreground sits a putto with books, a goblet entwined by a snake, a burning lamp, and a sheaf of corn.
