About this work
Father Time, holding a broken scythe in his hands, is seized by his wings by an allegorical female figure with a mask at her belt; the personification of art, or imagination. To the left in the foreground two putti at the portrait of Arnold Houbraken in an oval. The personification of imagination refers to the writer's attempt to preserve the artists recorded in the book from oblivion through biographies.
