About this work
Father Time, holding a broken scythe, is seized by the wings by an allegorical female figure with a mask at her belt; the personification of art, or imagination. In the left foreground, two putti near the portrait of Arnold Houbraken in an oval. The personification of imagination refers to the writer's attempt to preserve the artists recorded in the book from oblivion through biographical descriptions.
