Napoleon in the Bath, 1813

Satirical print on Napoleon after his defeat at the Battle of Leipzig, 1813. A desperate and struggling figure of Napoleon in a straitjacket is put into a bath of boiling hot water by the Allies. The bath is heated by the flames of Moscow. On the left: the Russian Tsar Alexander I and John Bull; on the right: a Russian Cossack pokes a hole in Napoleon's arm for bloodletting, the blood is caught in a bowl by Crown Prince Bernadotte of Sweden. At the top: a Dutchman pours 'Dutch drops' (small figures of armed Dutchmen and orange apples) onto Napoleon's head. A Spaniard kneels next to the bath.
