About this work

Portrait of the Leiden baker couple Arent Oostwaard (Arend Oostwaert) and Catharina Keizerswaard (Catharina Keyzerswaert) with various types of freshly baked bread (rolls, crackers, kadetten, duivekater) for the bakery. In the doorway of the bakery a boy blows on a horn to let people know that the bread is ready. According to an inscription on the back of the painting by Jan Steen this is the painter's son, Thaddeus, at the age of 7. Above the door grow grapevines.
