About this work

Around a pond in the gardens of the Zorgvliet house (Catshuis) in The Hague, peacocks, chickens, ducks, and other birds walk. On the water's edge to the left, the Swiss scientist Abraham Trembley (1710-1784) attempts to fish something out of the water with a net. Behind him stand the two sons of Willem Bentinck (1704-1774), the owner of the house, who assist him in his research on freshwater polyps in the ponds.
