About this work

The monument stands in a landscape with a weeping willow behind it. It depicts the moment when the boat of Commander Van Speyk explodes. A banner bearing his name hangs over the monument, and on top are a chalice, a shield with the coat of arms of Amsterdam, a chivalric order, and a laurel branch. Leaning against the monument is the personification of the city, holding her hand to her face. She holds the Dutch coat of arms and the flag.
