About this work

The massacre of the Chinese by the Dutch in the Chinese quarter of Batavia, after the discovery of the alleged treason, October 9, 1740. The streets and canals are filled with the bodies of murdered Chinese. In the foreground the Chinese housing block is on fire; to the right the bombardment with cannons of the house of the Chinese captain marked by the pole with the snake; the captain, who tries to escape in women's clothing, is captured.
