About this work
On a clearing in a camp, many soldiers are gathered around a large tree to which 21 corpses hang and more executions by hanging will take place. One condemned man is just having the noose tied around him, several others wait under the tree for their turn. On the right in the foreground a condemned man is in conversation with a clergyman. Below the image a six-line French verse. This print is part of a series of 17 (18 incl. title print) prints depicting various kinds of misery that warfare brings with it.
