About this work

A goddess of vengeance descends upon the walled city of Amsterdam. She holds a burning torch in her right hand with which she sets the city on fire. With her other hand, she points to the text 'urbs antiqua ruit'. Behind her, Valkyries (goddesses of war) descend upon the city. On the right in the foreground, a man, possibly Gijsbrecht, flees from the city. Above and below the scene, panels containing text and decoration.
