The Mennonites Tjerk Hendrikxe and Stoffel Thysen, both wearing tall hats, ask for the hand of Saartje Jansz. on behalf of their friend Reinier Adriaansz. Father Jan Jasperzen and his wife sit and stand by the window. At the door Saartje Jansz. listens, though she is in love with the dissolute Jan Claasz. At the bottom of the margin a four-line verse in Dutch and French. Scene from the first act of the play Jan Claasz or de gewaande dienstmaagd, by Thomas Asselyn.
