The Mennonites Tjerk Hendrikxe and Stoffel Thysen, both wearing tall hats, ask for the hand of Saartje Jansz for their friend Reinier Adriaansz. Father Jan Jasperzen and his wife Diewertje sit and stand by the window. At the door Saartje Jansz, who is in love with the dissolute Jan Claasz, listens in.
