About this work
According to the inscription in the cartouche, this whale stranded on the beach of Noordwijk on 28 December 1614. The length of the animal measured 58 feet. Van de Velde documents this event with this print. He shows the workers attending to the large fish and the fashionably dressed spectators on the beach. The cartouche is flanked by two fishermen. In the background, the dunes of the coast are visible and ships on the sea.
