Stranded whale at Berckhey, 2 February 1598. On the beach of Berckhey, between Scheveningen and Katwijk lies a large stranded sperm whale. In the foreground some riders, behind the animal people and wagons on the beach. Copy after the original by Jacob Matham. Numbered by hand in the top right: 2. Print inserted in the sixth album with drawings of fish, shells and insects. Sixth of twelve albums with drawings of animals, birds and plants known around 1600, made on commission of Emperor Rudolf II. With explanations in Dutch, Latin and French.
