About this work
Caius Mucius Scaevola holds his right hand in the sacrificial fire burning on an altar. He does this to show the Etruscan king Lars Porsenna that he fears him not. Porsenna and his army stand to the left. In the foreground lies the secretary of Porsenna who has just been killed by Mucius.
