About this work

Massacre committed by Don Frederik and the Spanish soldiers at Haarlem, 1573. In the foreground Don Frederik threatens to beat a woman with child and a praying monk. Behind Don Frederik is a group of murdering Spanish soldiers, one of whom has impaled the head of a woman on his lance. From a house a woman and a child are thrown out of the window. In the background the St. Bavo Church is visible. This print forms part of a series of 24 prints depicting scenes from the life of Prince William I, 1568-1584, and is an illustration to the eighth canto.
