About this work

Prince William of Orange (1533–1584) played a central role in the early years of the Dutch revolt against the Spanish king. Here he is depicted in military uniform as the leader of the revolt. Hendrick Goltzius must have been honored to portray the Prince of Orange at the age of only 23. The small scenes in the impressive frame refer to biblical stories. The engraving of William of Orange has as a pendant the portrait of Charlotte de Bourbon, his third wife. (RP-P-1940-258)
