About this work

In an interior of a kitchen, a cheerful company is gathered with an old woman baking waffles by the hearth (Shrove Tuesday). On the left, a man with a lute; on the right, a drinking monk with a nun. In the front right, a jester is being shaved; in the foreground, a dancing dog wearing a jester's hood. Above the hearth, a print with an owl as a pilgrim. With a two-column inscription, six lines in French on the left and five lines in Dutch on the right.
