About this work

Allegory on Fidelity, 1795. Fidelity sits on a chest, key in hand, with plans for fortifications under her footstool, and a dog beside her. To her left is Constancy or Strength; to her right, Hercules drives away Janus (Double-dealing with fire and water) and Deceit. Two cherubs offer a heart and a jug. In the foreground are the Dutch lion and a bound man (possibly War).
