About this work

At the body of the murdered Persian King Darius, an angel hands a laurel wreath and a paper as a symbol of the Persian Empire to Macedonian soldiers, possibly including King Alexander the Great. In the background, a ruinous landscape. In the cartouche frame, seated putti with globes and a representation of the four world empires as beasts, as seen by Daniel.
