About this work

A child or putto tames a lion and a bird of prey. They sit atop a cartouche with a verse in Latin. The shield is richly ornamented with scrollwork, two cherubs and dolphins. According to the verse, this child shows by taming the animals that man has been given leadership over the animal kingdom by God.
