About this work
A man works with a sickle on the land, while his mother offers him a cup of tea under a tree. The title of this print refers to the ten-part history commissioned by Emperor Montoku, written from 851 to 879. It is considered one of the Six National Histories of Japan. The depiction refers to the story of Ono no Takamura (802-852) who refused to travel with a delegation to China, because he could not care for his parents. As punishment he was exiled to the island of Oki, but was later pardoned due to his shown will to care for his parents. With two poems.
