About this work

Actor Ichikawa Danjûrô (1791-1859) in the role of Konoshita Tôkichi stands in front of a gate, with an umbrella and a goose pierced by an arrow in his hand. This print is the left sheet of a diptych that is part of a pyramid-shaped triptych; the right sheet and the sheet that belongs diagonally above the current sheet are missing. With one poem on the pillar: 'Praised as the 'thousand gourds' of Naritaya, again a successful season awaits this first-rank actor' Naritaya was one of the names Ichikawa Danjûrô used when writing poems.
