About this work
A woman looks back at a man holding a fan in front of him, on which a letter lies. Both poems on this print speak of love letters (kesôbumi) sold at the beginning of the new year. The man is likely a seller of this type of love letter. Since these sellers were pariahs, he has covered most of his face. The woman is likely from a high class and wears a special kimono that can cover her face like a veil.
