About this work

The virtuous woman distributes bread to the poor. One of the beggars is the personification of Charity. In the background the virtuous woman clothes the naked. The print is based on Proverbs 31:20: 'She stretches out her hands to the needy, she gives help to the poor'. The image bears a German inscription and is part of a six-part print series praising the activities of the virtuous housewife.
