About this work
A triumphal carriage with the representative of temporal power, the king. Beside him sits the allegorical figure of Wisdom. The carriage is drawn by two horses, Reward (adorned with laurel wreaths) and Punishment (adorned with instruments of discipline such as rod and whip), and driven by the allegorical figure of Justice. In the background, some duties of the temporal realm: punishing criminals and maintaining order. On a rhetoricians' stage, two tableaus vivants: one of reward and one of punishment. The print has a Latin inscription and a Latin caption and is part of a four-part series on the divine duties of the three estates.
