About this work
On the stage Apollo runs after the fleeing Daphne, whose hands are already changing into laurel branches. To the left of the stage floor stands Melpomene, the muse of tragedy. On the right stands Thalia, the muse of comedy. In the foreground on the left the philosopher Heraclitus covers his face with his hand, on the right the philosopher Democritus laughs and points. Between them the lyre, the attribute of Apollo.
