About this work

Allegory on the elevation of William IV to hereditary stadtholder, 1747. He sits on a throne receiving the state government from the Dutch Maiden. In the clouds, Peace and Fame blows a trumpet with the banner Historia Belgii. In the foreground, putti referring to the Windhandel of 1720. In the background, Minerva and Mercury mourn at the tomb of the prince who died in 1751. In the lower margin eight lines of Dutch text.
