About this work

Emperor Kangxi took up residence in the Summer Palace between April and October each year. He gave names to all 36 locations in the complex, describing them in poetry and prose, and tasked the court painter Shen Yu with translating them into landscape paintings. Kangxi called this site 'clear and cool'.
