About this work
The sky and water in the woodcut that Ripa relied on were left blank. Ripa diverged from his model by using parallel lines for these elements, thereby intensifying the contrast between light and dark in the print. Moreover, he introduced hatching to indicate shadows, a European method for enhancing the three-dimensional effect of the landscape.
